Moms and Kids Meet-Up for Clean Air and Healthy Communities!
Moms care about kids, and kids need clean air and communities free of toxic chemicals. In honor of Mothers Day, let's get together and send a message to elected leaders that we want our values represented in Washington, D.C.!
The Nevada Conservation League is working to:
1. Give the federal government the science-based authority it needs to regulate dangerous airborne pollutants, including airborne carbon like that produced by coal-fired power plants;
2. Create effective regulation of dangerous chemicals in our homes and workplaces. We need a comprehensive policy that protects public health and the environment, and companies that make and use chemicals should provide full information on the impact of their chemicals on the health of everyone, including children, pregnant women and workers.
Moms, their kids and supporters of clean air and communities will meet up this Saturday, May 12, at 11 a.m. at the Roots Community Garden, 715 N. Tonopah Drive in Las Vegas. Kids and their mothers will create large, colorful messages to send to elected leadership from Southern Nevada urging them to support legislation for clean air and healthy communities.
We’ll have fun, refreshments and surprises for kids and moms, and we’ll learn how we can make our neighborhoods safer and healthier places for ourselves and our families.

Last Call at the Oasis
One of the greatest environmental challenges of our time is largely flying under the radar: Water, or the lack of it, and the impacts that climate change and poor public policy are having on access to this product that is absolutely essential to life.
Here in Nevada, of course, water has been the fuel for growth and the source for political scandal. The NCL Education Fund and allied organizations are very concerned that plans by the Southern Nevada Water Authority to drill, pump and pipe water from rural Nevada to Las Vegas could have an enormous environmental (as well as cultural and economic) effect on the Great Basin. (For good or ill, SNWA Water Czar Pat Mulroy apparently has a prominent role in the documentary.)
A new movie, "Last Call at the Oasis," takes a look at water issues globally and locally. It's makers include members of the teams that brought "An Inconvenient Truth" and "Waiting for Superman."
After opening in Los Angeles and New York City last weekend, it is coming to Las Vegas this Friday, at the Century 16 Suncoast, 9090 Alta Drive. Las Vegas, NV 89144. It also opens this Friday in Irvine, CA; Washington, D.C.; San Francisco and Berkeley, CA. Here's the full list of theaters, dates, and reviews, which can also be found at http://www.lastcallattheoasis.com/#screenings.

Let's shut down Nevada's last coal plant!
On Thursday, May 3, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will travel to Southern Nevada to hear from people directly affected by the pollution generated at Nevada's last coal-fired electric plant. Conservation groups including the Nevada Conservation League are urging all those who can to attend either the meeting scheduled for early Thursday afternoon in Moapa or the meeting scheduled early Thursday evening in Overton.
The hearings are specifically on the EPA's proposals to limit nitrogen oxide pollution at the Reid Cardner Generating Station in the Moapa Valley. The NCL supports the rule-making, science-based authority of the EPA, and further urges the federal government to establish the strongest health-based rules possible. Strong citizen feedback to the EPA and to the owners of the Reid Gardner plant will help clean up our skies and benefit the health of young people downwind of the plant.
The earlier meeting is scheduled for the Big Auditorium in the Administration Building of Moapa Band of Paiutes on 1 Lincoln Street in Moapa from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with an informational session from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The second hearing is at the Ron Dalley Theater of Moapa Valley Empowerment High School on 2400 St. Joseph Street in Overton from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., with an informational session from 5 to 6 p.m. Click here for more information.
A limited number of car-pool seats are available. Email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you would like a ride from downtown Las Vegas to the meetings.
Let's make some history by moving to shut down Nevada's last coal-fired electric plant!
Greening Downtown!
We at Nevada Conservation League aren't formally part of this effort, but we want to tip our hats to our neighbors who are working to "Build a Greener Block" down the street from the NCL offices. There's a lot of that going on Main Street, from the solar panels in front of the new Las Vegas City Hall to our own offices in the LEED-Certified Faciliteq building, the rebirth of Downtown and the Arts District is coming hand-in-hand with a cleaner, greener esthetic.
You can find the "Greener Block" fun just north of Charleston Boulevard and Main Street in Downtown Las Vegas. The Faciliteq building is two blocks north, at 817 S. Main.
Details for this weekend's festivities:
This Saturday and Sunday, a group of sustainably-minded community members will Build a Greener Block. The group will take over a blighted section of Main Street to demonstrate just how amazing (and green) our Downtown can become. The weekend will include pop-up restaurants and shops, live music, and a chance to learn more about how we can all work together to revitalize the heart of our city.
The events will run from 10 a.m. to midnight on both days at 1042 Main Street.

Whither Lake Tahoe?
Lake Tahoe's future is incredibly important to the future of tourism in Nevada and the Sierra Nevada mountains. As part of the Graduate Program in Environmental Science Seminar Series, the Secretaries of the Departments of Natural Resources from California and Nevada will speak at the University of Nevada-Reno on April 23 at 4 p.m. in the Wells Fargo Auditorium in the Knowledge Center.
They will discuss policy issues in the Tahoe basin from the viewpoint of the States of Nevada and California. This has been a dynamic year for policy making at Lake Tahoe. The State of Nevada passed Senate Bill 271 (http://www.tahoebonanza.com/article/20110620/NEWS/110629994) which calls for Nevada to withdraw from the Bistate Compact that created the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency unless certain benchmarks are met. Moreover, with budget issues facing State and Federal agencies there has been an increasing call by policy makers and scientists to work together to come up with creative avenues for protecting Lake Tahoe.
